Sixteen year old Hazel is meant to be part of one of the early settlement groups on Mars. Her space shuttle, nevertheless, suffers from a navigational malfunction and crashes, but not before Hazel boards an escape pod and exits the ship on the last second. Moments later, she realizes she has landed extremely far away from their original destination, where the land is filled with volcanic activity and
earthmars-quakes are quite common. This means Hazel must survive against the odds until provisions run out, or help arrives.Back on Earth, Ground control (code name “parents”) believes her chances of survival are bleak and therefore decides that Hazel must communicate weekly with earth, through radio signals, to attend a support group in order to bring her moral up and give her a better opportunity to stay alive.
